Parish Councils have a legal right to be consulted on planning applications regarding their area. South Northants Council notifies the clerk of all applications and the deadlines in which a response needs to be submitted. Applications are reviewed during ordinary meetings of the Parish Council.
Village Design Statements have been prepared by some Parish Councils to help protect the character of villages. They are a practical tool to help influence decisions on design and development.
These documents should provide a clear statement of the character of a particular village against which planning applications may be assessed. They are not concerned with whether development should take place but with how planned development should be carried out, so that it is in harmony with its setting and contributes to the conservation and, where possible, enhancement of the local environment. Wappenham has produced its own Village Design Statement which has been adopted by South Northants Council as supplementary planning guidance.
